Welcome to the website of the graduate program of the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Social Studies of Masaryk University. The Sociology Department at Masaryk University, founded in 1921, is one of the oldest sociological centres in Europe. It offers a complete education in the discipline of Sociology at three academic levels: the Bachelor's degree program is offered in Czech only, while the graduate program – both Master's and Ph.D. degrees – can be studied in English.
The Master's program consists of three semesters of coursework and one semester of thesis writing. It has been carefully designed to offer students a rich and complete sociological education, while simultaneously offering flexibility and incentives for students to pursue their personal interests. From 2013, International Joint Master's Degree in Cultural Sociology is offered in cooperation with three partners.
The aim of the PhD program is to guide students to completion of their research and dissertation writing, building on a solid understanding of sociological theory, which forms the basis for the doctoral studies. Students entering this program with a non-sociological background may take courses in sociological methodology and theory to prepare for the dissertation work.
The Department seeks students with a strong interest in the development of contemporary societies, who want to research topics such as globalization, migration, popular culture, changes in identity and societal transformations. Our graduates are among the most successfully employed in the Czech Republic and in the European labor market.
