Optimal Study Plan – Cultural Sociology

The standard duration of the Cultural Sociology Master’s program is four semesters. To earn the diploma, students must obtain 120 ECTS credits for coursework, successfully complete a thesis (about 20 000 words in length) and pass the final examination.

Students of Cultural Sociology take 95 ECTS credits worth of coursework in compulsory courses and a minimum of 25 ECTS credits in optional courses (all of these must be selective = program options; all free electives count extra).

Sociology _13The optimum workload per semester is around 30 ECTS credits. Besides the program courses, you can take options from the whole-university offer, including languages and sports. Sports credits do not count towards the total credit value of the Cultural Sociology program.

Courses taken as part of study period abroad (from short visits to one semester studies) approved by the sociology departmental coordinator fully count towards the total credit value as optional courses (unless it has been arranged otherwise – e.g. as substitutes as concrete compulsory courses, upon prior consent of the course teacher and the program director). Read the full courses descriptions by clicking at course names under the plan below.

Please note that the plan is just recommended, and your own schedule can be chosen, as the program is flexible. Some students prefer to take all courses within the first three semesters, and just focus on thesis writing in the fourth. We recommend to take compulsory courses in the first year – and have a “mobility window” in the 3rd semester , but you might spread them. Thesis topic and thesis writing seminar must be taken in the last two semesters respectively. Students who enroll in spring semester, just change the order of courses starting with 2nd semester (spring) courses.
